Ages of kids: 2, 7, 9

Problem: My 2 year old son used to go to sleep without any problem. Then all of a sudden he became very clingy not wanting to be without his father. But then his father tells me when he's with him he wants me. When we put him down at night one of us has to be in the room until he falls asleep and then have to sneak out when he is asleep. Sometimes he wakes up in the middle of the night and sometimes he doesn't. If we try to just put him down by himself he cries horribly, we tried to let him cry but now he gets out of bed and hits the wall and kicks the door and throws a complete fit, and bothers my 7 year old son who shares a room with him. We don't know what to do anymore and are very exhausted about the whole thing, please help!
