Consistent Potty Training

Problem: Hi. My son is 22 months and since he was 19 months or so, he has been fascinated with the toilet and the potty chair. There is a little boy at his daycare who was being potty trained and he would try also. My nephew is 3 and just about potty trained. My son will sit on the potty, grunt and strain like he is pooping but it is just cuz he thinks he should do that. He will tell me "Beep beep!," which in his language means Diaper, or poop, before he needs to go. Sometimes we make it. I tried the treats when he peed or pooped, but he isn't consistent enough. I think I am just going to leave the potty out for him and if he is interested enough he will use it. I don't want to push him, I can tell he is not totally ready, but I can also tell that he is aware of the pee and poop coming out of him. When he is naked in the tub and stands up and pees, he sees it and stops it. And the fact that he tells me he needs to poop or needs a new diaper. I guess potty training is around the next bend. Any other suggestions on how I can make it a smooth transition?????

Editor's Note: Sounds to me like you are on the right track! Don't push, just gently remind. Praise when he does it on the potty, don't say anything when he doesn't (not even negative things). Keep up the good work! -- Delila
