#!Parentsroom Weekly Poll Results - Public Schools
Welcome to our Parenting Poll Page. Check here each week for the results of the previous week's poll, and also to see the results of past polls. Don't forget to answer this weeks Poll.
Are the nation's public schools doing enough to properly educate our children?
This week's poll resulted in another landslide, however, there were not enough responses for the results to be statistically significant (in my humble opinion!), even though I personally, agree with the results:
Here are the results:
- 80% Think that our public schools are NOT doing enough to properly educate our children.
- 20% believe that they ARE.
The following are some comments we received:
- In the school my children attend, sports
is more valued than the daily education.
- My husband and I are the parents of three children, ages 6, 10, 11. We are also public school teachers. We firmly believe that public schools are burdened with much of what parents should be doing. Perhaps another poll question might request information on whether parents are involved enough in their children's education.
- I think that the public school systems are doing a great job educating out children,It has to be up to the child to want to learn as well. I think that kids today are not focusing on learning, it's more of a friendly get together than learning these days, I think that if the kids took school a little more personally I think the kids would learn more. So Yes I think they are.
- Well, I do not agree with the format of teaching that has taken over in our public schools. And, I guess it is just as well that my kid needed more individual attention---- so I homeschool.
- My husband is an instructor at the local community college, and he is amazed and how many of the students do not know how to read or do simple math. I feel teachers have to spend too much of their time doing other things required by states, instead of teaching.
- I think that today's school has become more of a dumping ground for parents and less of an educational institution.
- No, I don't believe that WE the parents of public school children, as voters are doing our jobs. We are ultimately responsible for the quality of our children's education. The Public in Public Schools is us! We need to educate ourselves in who is on our school boards at the state and local levels and what their plans are for our children. Voting is our main tool for fixing our public schools! Lets hire some talent!
- I think that the teachers and school boards are more interested in how much money they can make than how best to educate our children. I agree that money is important...but the kids have got to come first in that job!
- I think too often that being a teacher is so undervalued in our society, that we often get a lower standard of teacher than we should have. There are some TERRIFIC teachers out there who do all they can to make sure that the children receive a proper education, but there are also many that are NOT so great, and even not that smart. What bothers me is I remember the students at college who were the Education majors, and they appeared (on average) to be NOT the "brightest lights" in the school. These are the people who are teaching our children today. However, I think it's also much more than the teachers. It's also the money that the federal government mandates that the towns and cities pay out for special ed. etc. without taking on the costs themselves. It's a lot of factors working together, and the kid's are the losers. I find it is worth every cent (of money that I don't have) to send my children to private school. The quality of their education and the student to teacher ratio is worth it.
- All children are not round pegs that fit in a round hole. Classes should adapt to childrens different ways of learning. There should be different way to determine if a child is learning or not. Different kinds of tests ect...
