Problem: My 2 year-old son drifts into his own world from time to time. He will ignore my wife and I, although he's clearly alert and awake. He doesn't do anything odd during these periods, just continues about his business as if we weren't there. If he were an adult, I'd swear he was ignoring us. He re-enters "our world" easily: whenever he wants something or doesn't get what he wants. Then he communicates actively. Is this normal 2-year behavior?
Solution submitted by Kaci: We must have the same child. My son does that too. Drives me nuts. I was coming here to post it as a problem. My son will be playing with his toys on the floor in front of me and just be zoning out, completely unaware that I am talking to him. Or he will walk across his room(with toys scattered from one end to the other), and walk across the toys without even noticing them there, or he will walk across feet like they aren't there, or if I am folding clothes he walks right through the stacks to get to me and knocks them over and has no clue that he is doing something wrong. How can I make him aware of his space, feet, whatever???? I show him that he knocks stuff over but it goes in one ear and out the other. My son isn't stupid. He is VERY intelligent. Knows his whole alphabet and numbers up to 20. He knows colors, and many animal names. He is talking very well for a 2 year old. He is just driving me crazy with his lack of awareness.
