Lice

Number of kids: 1 and one on the way

Ages of kids: 2 years old & a baby due Oct.17th

Problem: My problem is common, so I've been told. Two weeks ago my 2 year old son and I got our pictures done in one of those "old time" studios at Sea World. They had him wear a cowboy hat and the pictures turned out great. However, he got lice and gave it to me. We tried Rid, two times, they aren't all gone. I called the doctor and he said because I am pregnant and he is so young there is nothing they can prescribe to help. We are both going nuts washing our bedding and doing these treatments- 2 year olds Do Not Hold Still!!

Can anyone tell me if there is something else I can do or if my doctor didn't want to hassle with calling in something and there really is something he can give us? Also, do you think I should call (or try to call) Sea World and tell them? Those little bottles of Rid are expensive, I'd hate for another single pregnant mom to have to do all this stuff too.

Solution submitted by Coo-ee from Sacramento, CA: Our children picked up head lice at an unknown location. We have a product made by "Sunrider" which eradicates lice and nits. It is called "Sunsmile-Fruit and Vegetable Rinse." We mixed it with our regular shampoo and have found it to be very effective. Look in the telephone directory for a Sunrider distributor. This problem is certainly very wide spread and everyone, no matter how hygienic, is susceptible to attack especially those with children. Good luck.

Another solution submitted by Judith from Seattle, WA: I haven't had this problem (yet!) but my next door neighbor's 5 yr old had lice last summer. She used mineral oil over the course of a week (7 days)...combing it through her hair in the morning and at night before she went to bed. As suspected by the petroleum jelly user (below), it suffocates the nits and their eggs.

Another solution submitted by George G. from Jacksonville, FL: My twins got head lice recently, oddly enough right after a trip to Sea World. We have tried EVERYTHING with no permanent solution. The shampoos and rinses do not seem to be very effective any longer. I have gotten concerned about the repeated exposure to these harsh chemicals and went searching for alternative solutions.

We tried rubbing Vaseline and leaving it on overnight and it worked!! It leaves the hair quite greasy, but this may be part of its success. I believe it smootheres the lice and prevent adhesion of the nits to the hair shafts. And It is cheap!!
