Problem: I don't really have a problem. Would just like to talk with other parents who have had to go through hip surgery with their children. My daughter was born with dislocated hips and at 3-months of age had an open-reduction hip surgery. She is now 4 years old and the doctor wants to do another surgery called a "Pemberton." Has anyone gone through this?
Solution submitted by Jc21gw from Kokomo, IN: When I was born 18 years ago my hip was dislocated as well. I had an open reduction and was told that I would be fine and after numerous follow-up's I was released from my doctor's care. About two months ago I injured my hip by simply hopping up on a curb on my way home from class. I was in severe pain for two straight weeks and was mentally unprepared for what was to happen. I went to five different specialists who all considered themselves not able to handle my condition. Many different ideas such as hip replacement and fusion have been offered, but there is one operation that has been suggested that is very intricate and involves major blood loss. The worst part isn't that I thought that my hip would last me more than ten years, it's not even that I have to prepare myself and my wonderful parents to go through that again, it's that I was told by almost all of the specialists that I would never be able to be the one thing that I want most to be - a police officer.
My only advice to you is to do a lot of research in order to ensure your child the chance to fulfill all of his/her dreams.
Another solution submitted by Julia from Boynton, OK: Hi there, when I was a baby (now 27), I had a dislocated hip. I think it was noticed relatively late, when I was eight months old. I never had hip surgery but back then they put a kind of cast/diaper on me, that would hold my legs in the splits. Through that my missing hipbone grew back. It was a little bit thinner but yet perfect! I still have hardly any problems with my hip, I guess my two pregnancies wore it out a little. Now I don't know how bad your kids dislocated hip is, but that was what happened to me. I remember that later on my parents discussed surgeries with my doctor but they considered not to. I hope that was of any help! Peace and happy parenting.
