Bedtime for Teens!

OMG.  It's a fight every single night.  My 14-year-old insists that "no one" goes to bed at 10:00 and "all" of his friends are allowed to stay up as long as they want at night.  I am really tired of it.

Every single night. It's like having a toddler who doesn't want to go to bed.  And he says it is because he just lies there and stares at the ceiling for hours, that he can't sleep.

I am tempted to give him something to help him sleep, but really don't think medication is the way to go.  Any ideas?

Don't give in and do meds.  It's just teaching him that any problem can be solved with medication and it can't.  Don't let him watch TV or listen to music when he's trying to go to bed.  Maybe have him take a hot shower to relax before bedtime.  I'm not a fan of warm milk (eeww) but some people think it helps.

I think the thing is to prepare his mind for bedtime, just like little kids.  The more he fights it, the more he stresses out and worries about not sleeping.

Keeping up with my little monster is fun.

Re: Bedtime for Teens!

10 pm is late for me. I knew that when I was that age, I had to be in bed by 9pm.

My mom taught me this proper way of breathing that helps me fall asleep very easily. You have to breathe in deeply, such that your stomach goes up, and then breathe out slowly, such that your stomach goes down slowly. This is how infants breathe, by the way, and that's the proper way to do it. It's just that as we go older, our breathing changes. Our chest is the one that rises and falls when we breathe in and out, and not our tummy anymore.
