My Son Will Only Eat Hot Dogs. Should I Be Worried?

blink

My son is almost 2 years old and the only thing iI can really get him to eat is hotdogs!

I try to give him something healthy but all he wants is a hot dog. He likes maccroni and cheese and Cheerios cereal but that is normally what his whole menu consists of. He normally eat 2-3 hotdogs a day. It just seems like i've tried everything and nothing helps. Are there any suggestion that would help him eat better.

Thanks

Most Doctors will tell you that 2 year olds just are fickle about their foods and it will get better with time. But, us moms still worry. I would at least buy the no nitrates hot dogs and be as helalthy as possible.

Sometimes, 2 year olds will respond to different textures and colors. try the yogurts for kids for example. Cut up apple pieces and put in a new kids bowl. Sometimes what you serve the food in can accomplish what you are striving for.

Lastly, I would not give undue attention to the eating. It might be a way he has learned to get your attention. Make a fun time out of meal time instead. Play music, read him a story while he eats, or put on the favorite dvd.

My Dr told me, as long as they are eating something, they will be fine.   Mine will only eat chicken nuggets.  I've tried getting the veggie ones, but he knows better!  He throws them at me! funny

I've tried just not having any to give him and waiting him out because my MIL says, when he's hungry, he'll eat but whoa, that kid can outlast me.  The whole power struggle just ruined every day.  Thats when my Dr said not to fight him, he'll get over it.

The fun plate is a good idea.  Kids like things that are special.

Have you looked into Bento?  It's sort of time-consuming, but it's food all chopped up and prepared in these little sectioned bowls.  It's totally cute (although I can't imagine having time to cut carrots into little flowers!) flower

You can do more simplified versions of Bento that are still appealing to little kids.  This is a cute Bento Preschool Lunch:

Fruit, grains, dairy, it's all in there and it looks like fun!  What kid wouldn't want to eat big waffle squares and lima beans on funny people toothpicks?

Get more ideas at http://lunchinabox.net/

There is a whole industry full of containers, dividers and toothpicks that make bento lunches extra fun, but you don't need them to make healthy food look fun to a kid.  (You might still want them, though.  They are really cute!)

Ideas are worth nothing unless executed

I knew that when I was a kid, I wouldn't eat anything except deep fried pork. And there was a time my daughter wouldn't eat anything but friend chicken. Then she got over that and switched to boiled egg. But now, she's eating fine.

I like the Bento idea, by the way.
