Creepy Halloween Food

Mummy Dogs

These are so simple!  My kids love them- I actually think I'll make these for dinner tonight because I just picked up a bunch of crescent rolls on sale and we always have hotdogs.

Just roll out your crescent roll dough, pinch the seams together, then use a pizza cutter to slice the dough into strips.

Wrap each hot dog in a random, overlapping sort of way, stretching the dough a little, leaving a spot for the eyes and gaps between the strips for a mummy wrap sort of look.

Optionally, you can wrap a quarter slice of cheese with the dog for cheese dogs.  I've made the eyes with cloves before and the kids didn't like the residual taste after removing them... ketchup or mustard (as shown here) is probably a better choice.

Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake in 475' oven for about 13 minutes, until the wrapping is light brown.  Fun and easy!

Apple Bites

Totally creepy. But fun! Kids will love this one.

Cut an apple into quarters, then make two cuts (not all the way through) to remove a section for the "mouth".

Coat all exposed parts of the apple with orange juice, to prevent it from turning brown.

Stick slivered almond "teeth" along the upper and lower "gums" and serve.

Great project for kids!  Easy to do and healthy too.  Plus you get to do creaky old voices and keep asking if anyone's seen your teeth...

Kitty Litter Cake

If you can get past how realistic this looks (gotta love the newspapers under the litter box) it really tastes good!

You will need a NEW litter box, liner and pooper scooper.  Brand new.  Of course.

1 box spice or German chocolate cake mix
1 box of white cake mix
1 package white sandwich cookies
1 large package vanilla instant pudding mix
A few drops green food coloring
12 small Tootsie Rolls or equivalent

Prepare and bake cake mixes, according to directions, in any size pan. Prepare pudding and chill.
Crumble cookies in small batches in blender or food processor. Add a few drops of green food coloring to 1 cup of cookie crumbs.
Mix with a fork or shake in a jar. Set aside. When cakes are at room temperature, crumble them into a large bowl. Toss with half of the remaining cookie crumbs and enough pudding to make the mixture moist but not soggy. Place liner in litter box and pour in mixture.

Unwrap 3 Tootsie Rolls and heat in a microwave until soft and pliable. Shape the blunt ends into slightly curved points. Repeat with three more rolls. Bury the rolls decoratively in the cake mixture. Sprinkle remaining white cookie crumbs over the mixture, then scatter green crumbs lightly over top. Heat 5 more Tootsie Rolls until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle with crumbs from the litter box. Heat the remaining Tootsie Roll until pliable and hang it over the edge of the box.

Place box on a sheet of newspaper and serve with scooper. Yum!

Swamp Juice

I've never used tapioca pearls before, but I have to say they make great fish eggs!  Kids are sure to love this murky, bubbly drink.  Serving it in jars is a nice touch if you have them!

1/2 cup small tapioca pearls (found in the baking aisle of most grocery stores)
Food coloring
4 tablespoons sugar
8 gummy fish
Seltzer water
Lemonade
8 gummy worms

MAKE THE EGGS: Bring 6 cups of water to a boil and add the tapioca pearls. Reduce the heat slightly and boil the pearls, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 25 minutes.

COLOR THE EGGS: Divide the pearls, with the remaining water, between two bowls. Add 4 drops of food coloring (we used 3 drops of yellow and 1 drop of green in one bowl, and 4 drops of blue in the other) and 2 tablespoons of sugar to each bowl. Stir the mixtures, then allow them to sit uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes. Drain and rinse the pearls with cold water.

ASSEMBLE THE DRINK: Spoon 2 tablespoons of pearls into each glass and drop in a gummy fish. Fill the glasses with seltzer water, then add a splash of lemonade. Place a gummy worm around a spoon as shown.

Squid dogs!

Cut a hot dog into 4 pieces.  Into one end of each piece, insert 8 dry, uncooked spaghetti pieces.  (I usually break them in half.)

Boil for about 8 minutes.  The hot dogs will swell a little while cooking and hang on to the noodles.  They'll also round out a little on the top... much more squidlike!

To be really creepy, a little red food color in the water will turn the noodles pink, making it really look like a plate of slimy squid.

You can also mix in spaghetti sauce for a full plate-o-squid entree.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Re: Creepy Halloween Food

I've got another hot dog type food:

Worm SandwichWorm Sandwiches

This couldn't be easier but it makes a really gross looking sandwich.  Your kids will go -> eek

Slice up a hot dog lengthwise, then boil the strips.  They will get all curly.  Mix the strips in ketchup before placing on buns and serve.  Instant worm sandwiches!

Keeping up with my little monster is fun.

Re: Creepy Halloween Food

These are awesome!!  I haven't made them yet- they seem a little time consuming, but cool.

Worms!Realistic Jello Worms

  • 1 (6 ounce) package raspberry gelatin powder or 1 (6 ounce) package grape flavor gelatin
  • 3 (1/4 ounce) envelopes unflavored gelatin
  • 3 cups boiling water
  • 100 flexible plastic straws
  • 1 tall slender 4 cup container (same height as extended straws)
  • 3/4 cup whipping cream
  • 12 -15 1/16 drops green food coloring

Directions:

Prep Time: 15 mins

Total Time: 20 mins

  1. In a bowl, combine gelatins.
  2.  Add boiling water; stir until gelatins completely dissolve. Chill until lukewarm, about 20 minutes.
  3.  Meanwhile, gently pull straws to extend to full length; place in tall container.
  4.  Blend cream and food coloring with the lukewarm gelatin mixture. Pour into container, filling straws.
  5.  Chill until gelatin is firm, at least 8 hours, or cover and chill up to 2 days.
  6.  Pull straws from container (if using a carton, tear carton away from straws). Pull straws apart; run hot tap water for about 2 seconds over 3 to 4 straws at a time. Starting at the empty ends, push worms from straws with rolling pin, or use your fingers; lay worms on waxed paper-lined baking sheets.
  7.  Cover and chill until ready to use, at least 1 hour or up to 2 days.
  8.  Worms will hold at room temperature up to 2 hours.

Tip: put the straws in with the flexible end down and don't put therm under hot water for too long.

Keeping up with my little monster is fun.

Re: Creepy Halloween Food

These are too cute/disgusting!  If you don't have a mold to do the Meat Hand, just make rats.

Meat Rats Baked Rats

  • 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup uncooked long grain white rice
  • 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • uncooked spaghetti, broken into quarters
  • thinly sliced raw carrot
  • black peppercorns, cooked black beans
  • 1 (19 ounce) can ground tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions:

Prep Time: 45 mins

Total Time: 2 1/4 hrs

  1. Make the meat mixture. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, rice, onion, egg and 1 teaspoons (5 mL) of the salt. Mix well.
  2. Now make the rats. Using a measuring cup, scoop out 1/4 cup (50 mL) of the ground beef mixture. Form it, by hand, into a firmly packed teardrop shape, pointy on one end, rounded on the other. This is your basic rat. Place it into a 3-quart (3 liter) shallow baking dish and gently pinch in the neck area. Poke a piece of uncooked spaghetti into the larger rounded end as a tail. Repeat with the remaining ground beef mixture.
  3. When all the rats are neatly placed in the baking dish, stir together the tomatoes, water, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, remaining 1 teaspoons of salt and 1/4 teaspoons  pepper. Pour over the rats. Cover the dish with foil wrap (or a lid, if it has one) and bake at 350° F (180° C) for 45 minutes. Uncover and continue to bake for another 45 to 50 minutes, basting occasionally with sauce, or until the rice is tender and the rats are fully cooked.
  4. Gently remove rats, one at a time, from the sauce and place gently on a serving platter. (Take care not to damage the tails, they are fairly delicate.) Into each rat, insert two carrot slices as ears, peppercorns (or whatever) for eyes, and a few more broken strands of uncooked spaghetti for whiskers. Spoon sauce around the rats and serve.

Use this recipe or your favorite meatball recipe... serve either on spagetti or other pasta or mashed potatoes!

Remember if you make them too realistic, your kids might refuse to eat "rat"! upfunny

Pasta Peppers

Carve orange peppers to look like pumpkins and fill with your favorite pasta!  Spaghetti is shown but you could use orzo, baked ziti or any other type of pasta.

We skip the big messy pumpkins and make these instead.  Fast and fun.

Re: Creepy Halloween Food

Hi,

DIRT PIE WITH WORMS

2 to 3 qt. flower pot
1 dirt trowel
1 bunch plastic flowers
1 pkg. gummy worms
2 pkg. vanilla pudding
2 lb. Oreo cookies
3 1/2 c. milk
8 oz. cream cheese
12 oz. Cool Whip
1 1/2 c. confectionery sugar
3/4 c. butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix the pudding and milk, then whip in the cream cheese, sugar, butter and vanilla. When mixed, fold in the Cool Whip. Crumble cookies in processor. In the flower pot, put piece of foil in bottom to block holes. Then put a layer of cookies, then pudding and worms. Repeat until all the ingredients are used. Top layer must be cookies. Put bunch of flowers into pot. Serve with the trowel. Oreo cookies can be substituted for sugar cookies; make a sand pie, you can use a pail and shovel.

Thanks,
