Kids and Cell Phones

I will admit, my kids were not really ready for cell phones when they got them.  I got my daughter and niece each a Firefly when they turned 7; it was a kids phone that has a big "MOM' and "DAD" call button and could only be called by up to 20 numbers that we programmed...  and they promptly lost either the phone or the charger or both.  I had bought a prepaid year's worth of service that went to waste.

My high schooler didn't care about a phone til he got a friend... who is a girl (we aren't allowed to call her a girl friend.  She's just a girl who's a friend.)  Now it makes for good leverage to make sure his homework gets done.

Currently the 3 kids are sharing 2 phones and it's working out OK.

Do your kids have cell phones?  What are their restrictions?

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Re: Kids and Cell Phones

Mine are still too little, but I like the idea of being able to reach them when I need to.  It's more of a safety issue for me than for them to call friends on it.

Re: Kids and Cell Phones

It's a tough decision. The kids want phones and mp3 players and all the other electronics, but I know around my house, they get lost or broken pretty fast! We make the kids work off the price of a replacement or wait for a birthday or other holiday, but boy, do they complain. My response is well then, you shouldn't have lost/broken it in the first place! They don't seem to learn very well though.

I am tired of hearing, "So-and-so's mom just replaced HER phone when she dropped it in the toilet..." Talk about flushing away your money! And if you've signed up for a plan, you are paying for the service even while you make the child wait for a replacement. Sometimes it really feels like just flush the money away.
