How do I accept Halloween for its fun part?

I have friends whose church does not believe in Halloween. I loved it as a child and want my children to be able to enjoy it also. Part of it is fun. Part of it is frowned on by my friends. How does anyone else handle it?

My church sponsors a huge Halloween festival, so I guess it's ok with them!

I do know people who don't let their kids do Halloween stuff because they think it's about devil-worship or other weird stuff, but I think that is making too much out of it.  It's only about bad stuff if you MAKE IT BE about bad stuff, you know?

It's just a time for people to get together and act silly.  I think it's nice because it seems harder and harder to connect with people these days- everyone has work and running around and then recreation is in front of the computer or TV.

To me, Halloween is a good reason to get out and talk to all the neighbors and get the house all decorated.  It's just fun and makes fun memories for the kiddos.

Ooh- look what I found -> pumpkin

Keeping up with my little monster is fun.

There are going to many instances where friends disagree (religion, politics, etc). You'll just have to do whatever you believe to be in the best interests of your children and trust your friends to respect your decisons. They may not agree, but they should not allow it to weaken your bond of friendship.

I have family members who do not think Halloween is acceptable. How do I explain it to them? They think it is evil and I don't, but I don't have a good reason why .

What part of Halloween do they object to?

If the overload of sweet treats is a problem, the sweets can be portioned out over time or neighborhood exchanges can be made with only party favor-type items and sugar-free treats. The neighbors would have to agree to this in advance. Or, some people skip the door-to-door and have a Halloween party instead. That way, you totally control the treats.

If it's the frightful portion of Halloween that is objectionable, discourage gory or monster costumes. Encourage costuming that represents a vocation or hobby interest.

If it's because of the origins of the holiday, create your own version. Give it a different name, if that helps. http://www.history.com/topics/halloween

Those are good ideas. I think I have enough information to defend my position that it is just a fun time for the family.
