First Movie-Theatre Movie?

What's a good age to finally take a child to the movie theatre to see a flick? Our son is 4 and we've never taken him because, frankly, we don't trust him. We anticipate that he will lose interest in the movie and get all loud and fidgety then want to leave before it's over. We don't want to waste our money on tickets if it doesn't work out. What age do kids usually get excited about movies on the big screen?

We wanted to take Jacob to see Toy Story 3 but chickened out at the last minute. We're thinking about either a drive in movie first (we can walk him around if he is restless), or one of the free movies that Regal or the Parks offer in the summer next year. (he's 4 as well)

Ooh a drive-in movie is a great idea! Are there still any around here?

Oh yeah! The Stardust Drive in in Watertown and the Broadway Drive in in Dickson. Both are about 45 mins away.

I have to admit, I took my kids to the movies as infants because I love the movies!  But sometimes we did have to leave if they'd wake up and get fussy.

I think it depends on your preferences and what you can tolerate.  A drive in movie is a great way too go.  We go out to the Big Mo down here in Aiken... and they are having Triple Features this weekend!

My kids are too small to stay for the whole triple feature (although sometimes they just fall asleep in the car) but I think the idea is totally cool.  It's like sneaking into the other movies in the theatre... but legit!

Re: First Movie-Theatre Movie?

I remember the days when I took toddlers to the movies and cringed that they would act up... blink

I usually would go to an early afternoon show when no one was there so if my child DID act up, I could discipline him or teach him proper etiquette for a theater.   When I finally felt brave enough to go with the general public, I tried to choose animated flicks that I knew might keep his attention for longer periods of time.

I always sat near the exit so I didn't disturb others as I exited the theater when they did fall apart. Sat through many movies while bawling kids were trapsed from the top row down to the main level and across the theater to the exit.  Anyone who is a parent can identify.  LOL!

Unfortunately, they are going to have meltdowns and you just have to be patient with them until they learn how fun the movies can be.  You have to be prepared to leave the theater without seeing the whole movie so that they learn that certain behavior won't be tolerated.

Try it!  You might be surprised at how he does... goodjob
