Baby Items You Don't Need

You could easily spend thousands of dollars preparing for a new baby.  There are so many things out there that are just silly, like baby perfume and jeweled pacifiers... I mean, come on!

But even for those of us with simpler tastes, there are some things we feel we need when we really don't.  The most prevalent thing I think most people get is baby bedding.  I know I thought I had to have the whole matching sheets-comforter-bumper pad thing for the baby's room.

Well, not only did my babies end up rarely sleeping in their cribs, it turns out that parents are warned against having anything in the crib other than a fitted sheet on the mattress and a light blanket over the baby.  Pillows, bumpers and fluffy comforters are all considered hazards!

I think the most pointless thing I owned was a Diaper Genie.  I spent a few months wrestling the diapers into the thing and twisting up the plastic bag to seal them in but it didn't take long before we were just opening a bin and tossing them in.

What did you think you needed that really didn't get used?

Baby playpen.  I had one and I think we set it up twice.  It was really cute, but kind of a pain to lug around and took up too much room.  The baby did not like to be in it, either.  He'd just cry and cry so we packed it up and put it in the attic!   It might still be there, actually.  I should look someday.

Oh, I disagree.  For me at least, the pack 'n play was used all the time.

My kids liked to be in it with a few toys at home (thank God, otherwise I might have never had a chance to shower! angel ) but it really, really paid off when we travelled.  Wherever we went, whatever the surroundings, my baby had a familiar place to play and sleep once we set up the pack 'n play.

I guess it depends on your lifestyle and it is a big item to pack for a road trip but it made our lives much easier when the baby was happy!

What I had that was useless was a stroller.  Talk about a PITA.  I got it open once and couldn't get it closed- had to toss it in the back of the SUV still expanded!  I had a sling and it was all I needed.   Not a baby carrier but a real sling, a long piece of fabric with sqishy bumbers on the edges.

The sling allowed me to breastfeed anywhere (yes, even walking through Walmart grocery shopping), have my hands free to say, eat dinner or go through paperwork while still holding the baby (although he did get crumbs on him sometimes), made a great changing pad when out and about and when returning to the car with a sleeping baby, I could put him straight into his carseat, still wrapped in the sling and he never woke up since the temperature around him stayed constant.   I would have had to have so many other contraptions to replace my sling.  And I used it well into the two's!

Diaper Genie was the most useless thing I had. Never used a changing table either- I just kept a towel close by and either did changing on the floor or the bed.

Baby swing was worthless.  My kids hated it. Waste of money and space.

Keeping up with my little monster is fun.

Diaper Genie gets my vote as well. With the 2nd grandbaby, I just used the plastic grocery store bags. Tie it off and take it out. Much easier and more sanitary.

Best baby item I could recommend for grandparents would be the pack 'n play. goodjob
