How To Do a Christmas Cookie Party for Kids

I am planning on throwing a Christmas Cookie party for my 8-year-old daughter and a few of her friends.

I'll have a Christmas Apron for each one of them (canvas aprons from the Dollar Tree with paint pen names/candy canes.)

I can't decide if I should actually have them roll/cut/bake the cookies, or just have cookies already baked and let them decorate them.  What do  you think?

I think 8 is old enough to let them roll out and bake the cookies, if you don't mind the mess!

I think I'd do it this way:  Start with rolled cookies and let them cut their shapes and put them in to bake.   Then get them busy making a different kind of cookie that maybe doesn't have to be cut out.

Cookie presses are fun, but only one person at a time can use them, so that may not be the best idea for a group... you could maybe make different kinds of candy...

Have you ever made graham cracker houses?  It's really cute- you get a milk carton... wait, do they have milk cartons anymore?  I haven't seen any in a while... anyway, maybe you could find chocolate milk in the little half pint cartons and let the girls drink it.  Rinse them really well and tape them shut.  Then use icing to "glue" the graham cracker sides onto the "house" and break one cracker and use the two halves for the roof.  Give them about 10-15 minutes to set, then decorate them just like any gingerbread house.  So cute!   You probably want to make little cardboard bases for them to sit on and wrap with tin foil... or just put them on foam plates if that is too much work.

Have fun!  Post pictures so we can see how it went!

Keeping up with my little monster is fun.

Re: How To Do a Christmas Cookie Party for Kids

This is such a cute idea for a Christmas party!

My little girl is 5 and I think I might invite the two little girls on our street over to make cookies.  We've just moved here and my daughter tends to be shy around new kids, so I think it would help her to have something to do.

I'm going to pick up sets of Christmas cookie cutters from the dollar store that they can take home with them.  I'll probably just get each girl a roll of sugar cookie dough because I'm too lazy to make the dough myself.

When I was a kid, we used glasses to roll out the dough flat, so we'll do that.

I think for decoration, I'm going to let them paint the unbaked cookies with egg yolk paint.  You separate an egg yolk into a small bowl, then color it with food coloring.  Let the kids brush it onto unbaked cookies with cheap watercolor brushes.  It bakes up all shiny.   Soo much easier than coloring a bunch of frosting.

Thanks for the idea, I'm so excited about this now!  Kirsten will love it.
