How Much Do You Spend on Christmas Shopping?

I find it hard to stay on a budget this time of year and sometimes have to break out the credit cards.  I try to limit my spending to $200 per kid/spouse and $20 per other family member, but I will admit I go over that by forgetting to account for things I've bought earlier.

How do you approach your Christmas shopping?  Do you have a plan or just a general idea or total impulse shopping?

Some friends of our spend about $1200 per kid!  Every year!  I think that's insane.

We spend about $300 per kid and I put the money in cash in envelopes with each kids' name on it.  When it's spent, it's done.   My older stepson has gotten to the age that he'd rather have the cash.   It's boring, but it's what he really wants.  We usually wrap some things like PJ's and maybe a coat that we were going to get him anyway so he still has stuff to unwrap.

Makes my wife crazy, though.  She'd rather give him something than just cash.

I am honestly afraid to do the math.

I am a bargain shopper, so when I see a really good deal on something I buy it.  Then later, I figure out who it's for and who has what.  This ends up with my daughter getting a lot more stuff than my boys, unfortunately.  The good thing is that her birthday is in January so whatever I've bought gets divided into 2 piles and she gets some for Christmas and the rest for Birthday.

I really, really don't want to add it up though.  I usually tell myself that it's all such good deal that it doesn't matter how much I actually spent. goodjob

Keeping up with my little monster is fun.
