Thatis how parents feel when it is time for school to start. But, the flip side of that is getting the kids back into the routine of the school year. As it starts earlier and earlier, we sometimes find ourselves a bit rebellious also. However, we, as the parents, have to step up and do what we have to insure a good year for our kids.
Number one problem is getting out of bed again. Maybe your teen has been allowed to stay up as long as they want. Not now, teens need just about the same amount of sleep (10) hours as a toddler. Their bodies are changing and hormonal, they get tired and grumpy. Make sure they go to bed at a reasonable hour to make the morning happier.
Your younger ones should go to bed so that they can rest for 8 hours. That means lights out and no distractions. TV off, computer off, DS off, phones in another room. Some parents do not enforce their rules and kids can text and phone until the wee hours.
They will complain, but put all phones in one place overnight, maybe on their chargers, but not in the bedroom.
Children need fuel for the day. Even the pickiest of eaters can have something. It is very important to learning, not to be hungry. Stomachs growling, and dreams of lunch will not be conducive to listening and learning. Late for school is no excuse. Portable eats might include a homemade biscuit with a scrambled egg, a banana, toast with Nutella or peanut butter sread on it. A bagel or English muffin is also easy to grab and run. You might also stock some low fat yogurt. Maybe buying a bunch of small milk or juice cartons would supply some energy for the day.
If there is time for a sit down breakfast, lighten up those grumpy faces with pancakes cooked into a shape, a fast food like breakfast of eggs, bacon and toast with a side of hash browns. It is easy to make an egg mcmuffin or sausage mcmuffin at home. Cheese toast or waffles are also quick to do. A little effort is all it takes to start them out with a full belly.
Homework. Oh my gosh, that will happen also. Depending on your child, try to get into the habit of doing it early. If they go to daycare, advise the caregivers you want them to do it after their snack and a short playtime. Same is true if they come home. A snack, a little relaxation, then get it done. This will also help when it is time to go to bed. If they play sports and have practice, it should be done before practice or a game. They will be tired after. Remember the priority.
Clothing. If your child wears uniforms, this is easy. If not, outfit must be decided on the night before and all parts located. If it is dirty, it has to wait until the wash is done. Teach your children to use the dirty clothes system in your house. A basket in each room is the simplest. If they are Middle School age, they should be encouraged to bring the basket to the laundry room themselves, without nagging. By the time, high schoolers are Juniors or Seniors, they should be taught to take care of their own clothes. Good training for college and/or life on their own.
Try to stay organized and your kids will learn to, as well. Have a happy and succesful school year and your nerves will thank you.
