Problem: My son keeps getting a rash on his bottom and the doctor said it is folliculitis, but it keeps coming back when we stop using cortisone cream on it. Some times it itches real bad. I'm worried that it might be the diaper rash associated with internal thrush and that he might need Nystatin pills to clear it up. He also makes throaty noises and has an itchy throat. He has Down Syndrome so it's hard for him to explain how he feels. How can I tell the difference of whether he has heat rash or the "diaper rash" associated with thrush? He also has allergies. This summer he broke out in rash all over his body and was given prednisone which did help but the diaper rash continues to be a problem.
Update submitted by Jan: I still haven't figured out all my son's problems, but he was diagnosed with eczema and the doctor said children with Down Syndrome are prone to skin conditions. In case anyone needs to know: he was given 2.5% hydrocortisone cream for his face (I used it then switched to Ponds Cream dry skin formula as it worked well for his dry skin as a baby); triamcinolone acetonide cream .1% for rash on his trunk and extremities; Cetaphil (over the counter) gentle skin cleanser (sold at WalMart, etc.); T/Sal shampoo by Neutrogena for scally scalp (worked well!); Fluocinonide topical solution to put on his hair after I wash and dry it well (works great! I even am trying it on his bottom for rash, that's my own experiment.); Emgel (erythromycin)2%, which is an antibiotic in a dropper bottle that's used on pimples, infected spots, (it has alcohol to dry these areas also). Tried Lac-Hydrin 12% cream as a body hydrating lotion but am using Ponds Cream more now as that was a prescription. Sounds like work? Takes me about 40 minutes a night. I dry him with a towel and then use a hair dryer to dry him thoroughly. Now that the weather has cooled and the chiggers and insects are going to die, we are mostly dealing with contact allergies and dry skin.
