Problem: My daughter has been diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. I'm just wondering if any parents here have had to deal with this sort of problem. Her FAS mimics ADHD and she is on Ritalin. Her meds help her tremendously. I'm dealing with several behavioral problems lately, and could use some advice!:-)

Another solution submitted by Shannan from Lexington, KY: The behaviors you are seeing are typical of FAS/E. One of the keys is STRUCTURE- I mean structure that no matter what you do not veer away from (ex: dinner at 6:00p.My. bath at 6:30p.My.; lights out at 7;00p.My.) This will take some adjustments on your part and the family as well but it is well worth it. My son is very impulsive and can be violent at times. He is now on prosaic to help him control things. It is working wonderfully for him also look into Aspersed's Syndrome ( this is a high functioning form of autism) the suggestions they give work wonders for the FAST/E child. Also contact:

Another solution submitted by Sue from Altamonte sp., FL: What you are seeing is very typical of a fetal alcohol syndrome child. They are very different but also very alike.Understanding that she can not help some of her actions. Structure is very important for her. When you change for one activity to another give her plenty of time to adjust.(they have transitioning problems).they also don't understand the idea of cause and effect. Research as much info as possible on FAS so you understand what she goes through.
Another solution submitted by Elm from Prince Albert, SK, CAN: I have had the care of a 6 year old who has f.a.s. behavior problems such as tantrums, short attention are quite common with her. We use a program called 1=2=3 magic and that has helped enormously.
