Information on Stuttering Needed

Name: Mary

Problem: I am looking for information about speech disorders, specifically, stuttering as my 10 yr. old son has a severe stutter and his communication is severely limited. He receives speech therapy through the school system but it just doesn't seem to help. We have been unable to convince our insurance company to cover private therapy and at $140 a session we cannot afford to pay for it. A therapist told us he would need at least 2 sessions a week, probably more. Any advice or direction anyone could give us would be greatly appreciated.

Solution submitted by Zak from Canada: I am a university student in Canada, who is a stutterer. I went through the school district's attempts to correct my speech, and they are useless. The people that work for the districts, generally, (I have been through 7), do not have specific stuttering treatment background. My stuttering became continually worse until I attended a 40 hour intensive therapy session, now I love public speaking and no-one knows at the University that I once stuttered. For more information contact me I would be more that happy to help. zakary@usa.net

Another solution submitted by Debbie from Orangevale, CA: My nine year old has had speech problems. Is the school district providing as much therapy as you feel he needs, or a therapist feels he needs? If not, call another IEP and increase the amount of therapy he receives from the school. As a parent you have rights. You call the shots, not the school district. The law says so. But usually parents don't know all their rights. There are many advocacy groups who have helped me. I am in CA.
