Should sex education be taught in school?
Just about everyone who answered this weeks poll thought that Sex Education should indeed be taught in school. We didn't get any "no" answers at all.
Here are the results:
- 87.5% said they believe Sex Ed SHOULD be taught in the schools.
- No One said that Sex Ed should NOT be taught in the schools.
- 12.5% said that it depends.
The following are some comments we received:
- I believe Sex Education should be taught in a responsible manner in schools. Probably not until around the 6th grade, though.
- I had sex ed in high school and it was a real eye opener. I went to a Catholic high school so actually he couldn't teach sex ed so he covered the topic up with a lot of biology and anatomy but threw in lots about the birds and the bees too. My family NEVER discussed the topic at home and so it was a big help. He must have said something right as no one in my class ever got pregnant!
- We as parents choose to send our children to the schools we have, in doing so we have allowed those teachers to teach our children what is needed to grow in life, and sex is part of life. If it wasn't for sex we would not be here today. I believe that along with the teachers we also need to be the teacher, and answer all questions regarding sex education by being open and honest with our children about sex, so they learn it at home first! Then they can become responsible adults when it comes time for them to be able to have sex!
- Most definitely, no doubt! With the chance of getting Aids today, I think it is very important that kids learn today about sex and adult way of thinking about sex. And I also think they should have condoms available in schools as well, I mean we all know teenagers are going to have sex no matter how good we teach them, so we may as well have them protected. So yes it's very important!
In the perfect world, sex education should be taught by the parents, however, we know from real life that parents don't always do this. Some do not because of their level of discomfort, some because they may not have enough of the facts themselves, and unfortunately some that really don't care. Children learn very early on what questions they can ask at home and what questions that will be brushed off. When I hear a parent say "Oh my child has never asked me anything about sex" and they mistakenly feel proud, I question whether they have created an atmosphere whether it is o.k. to ask these type of questions and others that may be difficult or complicated to answer. I do want to know what's being taught so I can use it as a basis for discussion at home. I can also add what I feel are our family's viewpoint or morals, even if it differs with what is being taught. We can't always control what's being taught, (no one would ever come to a consensus) but we can discuss our own viewpoints and beliefs without putting down others who view differently (like with religions).
- Information at school should not be the only source your children get. It should get discussion at home started. Parents need to be open and honest with their kids.
- I think the facts of life should be taught. As far as hair growth, ok to masturbate and that girls get their period. I do not want them legislating morality to my child by handing out condoms. I am a realist but I do want my child to wait if possible.
- Yes! I think sex education should be taught in the school systems all over America. I believe that it is the parent's job to teach at home FIRST, but in the real world that doesn't happen. I'm all for handing out some sort of birth control, especially if the child asks for it.
- I think sex education should be taught in school because many kids come from homes where the parents are either too apathetic, or too embarrassed to discuss this important subject. But the curriculum should stress abstinence and the idea that it's "cool" to be a virgin. Just because the kid is physically mature enough to menstruate or get an erection does not negate the fact that they are still kids and not mentally mature enough to handle the emotions and consequences that accompany sexual activity. Merely teaching the body parts and functions, and offering free condoms falls short of educating kids about the dangers of STD's. The emotional and financial aspects of teen pregnancies should also be stressed.
