Toddler Moving Chairs

Name: Athenae

Location: Bryan, TX

Number of kids: 2

Ages of kids: 2 and 2 months

Problem: I have a 2-year-old child who likes to move chairs from room to room to climb to where she wants to go to get what she wants. I have tried saying "no" and telling her not to. She persists in doing this over and over. I don't know what to do next. Any suggestions?

Thanks for posting this problem and to those that provided the "solutions." Now I know not to go nuts when as my 17 month old moves every chair in the house and climbs up on everything. I'll just keep saying no and being there with the ice packs and one day it might sink in! At least I was handling it right. Thanks!

Another solution posted by "Another One" from Chandler, AZ:My lovely daughter has been moving chairs now over a month. She is only 16 mos. She mostly will go to the kitchen table and move the chairs to get on them and on the table.

I have had to take her down and tell her NO!, then remove her from the area. I just keep doing this because eventually she will get tired of hearing NO and hopefully stop.

She at this time is having temper tantrums on the floor and I just basically tell her, "We do not go on the table," and let her have the tantrum. She will stop crying if I do not react. I think that is the key to a lot. Out of my experience, she really stops crying after about 15-20 seconds and will go to another activity or her toys or try again.

Keep consistent. Especially at this age. They will remember. Good Luck!

Another solution posted by Joyce:I have a 19 month old that has been doing the same thing since she was 11 months old. She has fallen backward off the table and turned over the chairs many times and she still climbs. It is their nature to climb and there is not much you can doing to STOP it. Set limits and let your child know that he/she has crossed the safety zone. Children learn best with repetition. Just be there with ice packs when the child falls and try not to say "I told you so!" One day it will click.
