Problem: My 2 year old Grandson uses his head as a weapon. He will rear back and hit the unfortunate person holding him. He also will fling himself on the tile floor and hit his head several times until he is in pain...how should I handle this?
Solution submitted by Michelle from Alto Pass, IL: I have heard that a child who has unusual habits, such as head banging, my have a problem that you may be unaware of. Do you have a babysitter? You may want to take a closer look at your caretaker. I'm not saying that is the problem, but it could be. It wouldn't hurt to check it out.
Another solution submitted by Colorado Mom: My sister-in-law had that problem with her youngest of three boys, and her solution was to find ways to direct his energy in less painful ways. When he would headbang, she would tell him he could go to his room and bang his head, fists, feet, etc. on the mattress of his bed. Also, if she sensed a fit coming on, she would take him outside for some running and fetching play. It really seemed to get his aggressions out in a way which helped his poor victims! It took a while, but it did work.
