Crib Sleeping

Problem: My 14 month old son is refusing to sleep in his crib. We give him a bottle, and have him sit with us until he falls asleep, and put him in the crib. If I put him in the crib awake, he screams, although he will put himself to sleep other places (i.e., a cushion on the floor in the livingroom) He has slept through the night since he was about 6 weeks old, but now, he is waking up every night screaming uncontrollably. If I try to sooth him, leave him in the crib and leave the room, he throws everything out of the crib including his pacifier, and screams so hard he is gagging. Some nights (read most nights) he ends up in bed with us. I don't mind this too much, at least we all get some sleep, except instead of waking us lately, he is just crawling down the end of the bed and getting down. Although my son walks perfectly, he isn't good on stairs yet, and I haven't figured out how to block the top of our stairs yet. What are some things you have done to get your babies to like their crib? At what age did you switch to a bed?
