Ages of kids: 5, 3, 21 months, 3 months
Problem: Too often, my 3-year-old son hits other children, throws toys, pushes, etc. He also does not listen, unless he wants to listen or unless there is some benefit that he will derive. This is not a constant behavior as there are times when he plays and behaves wonderfully and listens, but the aggressive behavior happens too often. I have tried speaking with him, time-outs, thinking chairs, etc. and nothing seems to work. HELP!
Solution submitted by Sharon from Calgary, Alberta, CAN: How often is too often for hitting others, throwing toys etc? Consistent punishment is necessary every time inappropriate behavior is displayed. Some children terrorize everyone around them because some parents have the notion that spanking causes children to be aggressive. This simply is not the case. Time out or removing toys is the solution for more compliant children. This does not work for all children though.
