Potty Training 18 Month Old

Ages of kids: 18 Months Old

Problem: I am a first time parent and would like to know if I'm trying to potty train my 18 mo. old son too early. He will occasionally use the potty if I put him on it. Suggestions welcome.

Solution submitted by Jen from Frederick, MD: While I think that readiness for toilet training is unique to each child I have a recommendation for a wonderful, make-sense book called Making the Terrible Twos Terrific. It addresses a lot of toddler specific problems such as potty training. The author says that "most" kids experience a window of readiness between 20 and 25 months. The toddler shows his/her readiness by being aware and able to indicate a need to go to the bathroom, experiencing long periods of time staying dry, (day and/or night), and expressing an interest in the actual potty. Good Luck!
